Jewish History
Jewish history is a story of communities, migrations and survival across many centuries and countries. Edmund de Waal's The Hare with Amber Eyes tells one family's part in it: the Ephrussis, Jewish grain traders and bankers who rose to wealth in nineteenth-century Odessa, Paris and Vienna, and lost almost everything after the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. A collection of netsuke, saved by a maid, links the generations. Beautifully written and deeply moving. More books will join this category; see Judaism.
