Criminology

Criminology studies why crimes happen and how societies respond. Philip Zimbardo's The Lucifer Effect looks at one of the central questions: how ordinary people come to do evil. Zimbardo revisits his 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, in which students playing guards began to abuse students playing prisoners, and connects it with the abuses at Abu Ghraib, arguing that powerful situations and systems shape behaviour. A challenging, much-discussed book. More criminology books will join this category; see Law, Crime & Justice for more.

Prisons & Corrections

Books about prisons, punishment and what incarceration does to the people on both sides of the bars. Philip Zimbardo's The Lucifer Effect returns to his 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, in which college students assigned to play guards quickly began to humiliate those assigned to play prisoners, and the study had to be stopped early. Zimbardo connects it with the abuse at Abu Ghraib and argues that prison systems, not only bad individuals, produce cruelty. A much-debated book on power and responsibility.
