Publisher profile
Mariner Books Classics is the backlist reissue line of Mariner Books, a HarperCollins imprint. It keeps modern literary fiction and nonfiction in print, from Yann Martel's Life of Pi to Philip Roth's novels.
Mariner Books Classics is a reprint line inside Mariner Books, which is itself an imprint of HarperCollins. Mariner began in 1997 as a paperback imprint of Houghton Mifflin, issuing fiction, nonfiction and poetry in trade paperback. HarperCollins bought the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt consumer publishing business for 349 million dollars, and the sale closed on 10 May 2021. The Houghton Mifflin Harcourt name stayed with the school-learning company, so HarperCollins used the Mariner name for adult books and later folded its own Custom House list into Mariner. Most of the older Houghton Mifflin Harcourt backlist went there too.
The Classics label is the shelf for books meant to stay in print. Mariner's editors have spoken of a heritage that stretches back to 1832 and of building the brand around that backlist. Under the Classics name the imprint has reissued Ann Petry's novel The Narrows, and it took on all 31 books by Philip Roth, starting with the American Trilogy: American Pastoral, I Married a Communist and The Human Stain. The new Roth covers were designed by Will Stehle. The wider Mariner paperback catalog includes George Orwell, Virginia Woolf, Italo Calvino, Hannah Arendt, Philip K. Dick and Jhumpa Lahiri.
Yann Martel's Life of Pi is the title that brings many readers here. It follows a boy who ends up on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker, and the story of those 227 days ends on the coast of Mexico. The novel won the Man Booker Prize, and retail records list both a 2002 hardcover and a 2003 paperback under the Mariner Books Classics name.
Expect established books rather than debuts: modern literary fiction and nonfiction in paperback editions with fresh covers. If Life of Pi was your way in, the Roth novels and Petry's The Narrows show how far the list reaches from a story about a lifeboat.
