About And Other Stories

And Other Stories is an independent publisher whose main office is in Sheffield. Its founder, Stefan Tobler, is a translator from Portuguese and German who was born in Belém, Brazil. In 2009 he met with fellow translators and writers to talk through the idea of a collective that would publish fresh, contemporary fiction. The company was formed in 2010 as a community interest company, a not-for-profit legal form. In 2017 the main office moved from the south-east of England to Sheffield, and the press also works with offices in London and New York.

The list is mostly contemporary writing, with a large share in translation. The publisher says it chooses books for literary merit and wants to push readers a little beyond their habits. Subscriptions are central to how it works. The Publishers Association describes it as the first UK publisher of literary fiction to make direct, advance subscriptions a major part of its business, and the press itself says subscribers give it the confidence to publish what it does. Arts Council England also recommended extra funding for it in the 2018 to 2022 national portfolio, alongside other northern independents.

Heart Lamp is the book that brought it widest attention. Banu Mushtaq wrote its twelve stories in Kannada between 1990 and 2023. They follow women and girls in Muslim communities in southern India. Deepa Bhasthi translated them, and the UK edition appeared in September 2024. In May 2025 it won the International Booker Prize, the first short story collection to do so. It was the publisher's first win from its sixth nomination for the prize. Earlier nominees on its list include The Remainder, shortlisted in 2019, and Wretchedness, longlisted in 2021. Elsewhere the catalogue runs to books like Tentacle by Rita Indiana, translated by Achy Obejas, a dystopian novel.

If you came here from Heart Lamp, expect more of the same kind of choosing. The books are picked one by one rather than to fit a trend, and many come from languages English readers meet less often. Some will be quiet and some strange. The publisher's approach is to trust readers with both.
